I have used it to cut branches over 2" in diameter and clear lots of thick underbrush and cane. I have basically beat the crap out of it for 2 years and it has not bent or broken whatsoever. I would like it better if it was US made, but that is just a conceit on my part. i would also like it if it was a little thicker and harder steel, so i could put a better more convex edge on it (more like a sword), but for what i paid for it at Academy Sports...it does a great job. If you really understand how to use an edged weapon properly, you should have no problem taking down any reasonable sized brush with this blade. I keep it (and a small 2lb axe) under the seat of my truck 24/7 in case I need to clear out some brush on a trail, etc. but this is much lighter than the axe to carry if you have to leave the truck. I would have no issue taking this into the backcountry on a survival preparedness expedition. This review is from: Gerber 31-000758 Gator Machete with Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement) While I may not know much about clearing brush with a machete, after a few days of searching, reviewing, reading, and studying, I settled on this one for cleaning up paths around my house. From 10 minutes of work, I cleared a path littered with overgrowth, trees, and large shrubs. I managed to get it through a 4 inch thick gum tree, while using in like an ax, in 3 swings. While that may seem implausible, the knife quality edge that it shipped with held out beautifully, and the blade hardly paused on the final stroke. In the 5 minutes afterwards, I used the saw back to break the limbs down to a manageable size for local garbage collection to deal with. In the 90 degree Fahrenheit heat, with a 60%+ humidity, I hardly broke a sweat. I would wholeheartedly recommend this machete for anyone looking to clear some trails, without breaking the bank. That is one thing you need to keep in mind when buying a machete. Do you want a "do all" or are you more concerned with household/yard/lawn chores. This was never designed to be a "bush" machete. Gerber admits that. It was designed to be used by the common guy with chores and the occasional camping trip in mind. Does that mean it can't survive in the "bush"? No, it can do just fine but not as good as some of the heavier thicker bladed machetes. Again, that's not what you are buying with this. Having been in the military and actually being issued machetes for various missions, I can call myself a decent judge of character for a machete. This thing is great for around the home. It goes through limbs with ease. I've chopped 2-3 inch limbs with minimal effort. The saw end actually works though it does take some getting used to. The blade is thick and sharp out of the box, the grip is fantastic and it locks with absolutely no slop. I'm cutting arm hairs without ever putting it on a sharpener. Its a bit heavier than one would normally want for an EDC, but this is probably why it has no belt clip and comes with a nylon sheath. If you are looking for a big folder on a budget that can do everything from opening the kids thick plastic toy packages to skinning a buck, this is the knife for you. The blade is way to thin for any use, but the lightest duty or task, & thin case construction. Good for a letter opener. Not much else. Not even close to the quality of my Buck knifes, or my Ka-Bar knifes! This is not, in any way, a heavy duty knife. Not even medium duty. Just plain poor quality. Poor balance, and feels to light in my hand. The blade itself opens with resistance, and not freely as it should, being a liner locking blade. I'd be afraid to take it camping, and it is most definitely not a survival knife. It failed every expectation I had for it. I just can't even express how disappointed I am in this knife! First and Last Gerber knife I will ever buy! Extremely solid lockup, no slop or play in the pivot. Not really heavy enough for bushcraft, but an adept and strong carver or game knife. I decided to gently wire-brush the finger-grip region to break the crisp milled edge for a bit more comfort. Very sharp factory edge, but not razor. I steeled it a bit and it improved. Good sized lanyard slot, will fit most cords. Since all the knife's mechanical edges are 'crisp' the lanyard slot should probably be 'softened' with emery to reduce fraying. I got 2 of these things, one for me and the other for the girlfriend to keep in our cars. First off the multi tool is ok, not great but better than some of the cheaper ones on the market, it seems to work ok for what it is. The firesteel is also not that bad, it's bigger than the one that comes with the Ultimate knife, it makes sparks. And the flashlight is not that bad considering its a single LED one AAA light. Mine runs for a bit over 4 hours on a super cheap battery. All in all the whole kit was OK for what I paid for it. I'm glad I got them, but I'm really glad I got them for alot less than 80 bucks. By far the best part is having those things in one holster. That's why I actually got it. It is made in China so the quality is shoddy. I have used it for a few miscellaneous tasks and am afraid I will break it. ALL of my other Gerber products have been made in the U.S.A. and are amazing, some have been passed down from my father to me as well and work better then this. I don't know when Gerber sent their products to be made in China but I will not buy Gerber anymore because of it. In an absolute emergency I would use this but it would be my very very last choice. If you are looking for something to throw into an emergency kit that you wouldn't use often I would say you could find better for less money and I would not recommend this.
