I have used it to cut branches over 2" in diameter and clear lots of thick underbrush and cane. I have basically beat the crap out of it for 2 years and it has not bent or broken whatsoever. I would like it better if it was US made, but that is just a conceit on my part. i would also like it if it was a little thicker and harder steel, so i could put a better more convex edge on it (more like a sword), but for what i paid for it at Academy Sports...it does a great job. If you really understand how to use an edged weapon properly, you should have no problem taking down any reasonable sized brush with this blade. I keep it (and a small 2lb axe) under the seat of my truck 24/7 in case I need to clear out some brush on a trail, etc. but this is much lighter than the axe to carry if you have to leave the truck. I would have no issue taking this into the backcountry on a survival preparedness expedition. This review is from: Gerber 31-000758 Gator Machete with Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement) While I may not know much about clearing brush with a machete, after a few days of searching, reviewing, reading, and studying, I settled on this one for cleaning up paths around my house. From 10 minutes of work, I cleared a path littered with overgrowth, trees, and large shrubs. I managed to get it through a 4 inch thick gum tree, while using in like an ax, in 3 swings. While that may seem implausible, the knife quality edge that it shipped with held out beautifully, and the blade hardly paused on the final stroke. In the 5 minutes afterwards, I used the saw back to break the limbs down to a manageable size for local garbage collection to deal with. In the 90 degree Fahrenheit heat, with a 60%+ humidity, I hardly broke a sweat. I would wholeheartedly recommend this machete for anyone looking to clear some trails, without breaking the bank. That is one thing you need to keep in mind when buying a machete. Do you want a "do all" or are you more concerned with household/yard/lawn chores. This was never designed to be a "bush" machete. Gerber admits that. It was designed to be used by the common guy with chores and the occasional camping trip in mind. Does that mean it can't survive in the "bush"? No, it can do just fine but not as good as some of the heavier thicker bladed machetes. Again, that's not what you are buying with this. Having been in the military and actually being issued machetes for various missions, I can call myself a decent judge of character for a machete. This thing is great for around the home. It goes through limbs with ease. I've chopped 2-3 inch limbs with minimal effort. The saw end actually works though it does take some getting used to.
